How To

How to stain wood

The process of staining wood involves the application of chemicals to the wood's surface, which causes it to change its color. This chemical reaction causes the wood color to change from white and brownish red. The most common type of wood used for staining is oak, although many other types of wood can be stained.

You can apply wood stains in many different ways. One method involves mixing the stain and a solvent and then spraying it on the wood. You can also apply a solution containing water and dye directly to the wooden surface. Stains can also be mixed into paints and varnishes, becoming part of the finish coating.

The first step in staining wood is preparing the surface. To apply the stain, clean the wood completely. Sanding the wood smooths out rough spots and scratches. The next step is to choose the stain type you want. There are two main types of stain: non-penetrating and penetrating. Penetrating stains penetrate deeper into the wood than non-penetrating ones, making them ideal for dark colors such as mahogany. Non-penetrating oils work best when used with light colors, like maple.

After choosing the type and application method you prefer, gather your tools. Paintbrushes are great for applying stain because they allow you to evenly spread the liquid across the surface. You should also have some handy rags to wipe up excess stains after you finish painting. If you plan on mixing the stain yourself make sure that you have enough containers to hold the different components.

After you have prepared your materials for staining, clean the area. Use warm water and soap to clean away dirt and dust. Use a dampened sponge and warm water to clean the entire piece. Be sure to get rid of all loose material, especially if staining is planned for darker wood.

Next, apply the stain. Apply the stain by brushing or spraying it onto one side of the furniture. You should work slowly and carefully. Continue moving along the grain until you reach your opposite end. Keep the stain from dripping off the wood's surface. Before you proceed with the next steps, let the stain dry completely.

A coat of clear polyurethane sealing agent is applied to protect the paint. Three coats are recommended for polyurethane. Allow the third coat to dry overnight before sanding the final coat.
